Debate Workbench · updated 3 October 2026
In short: Debate Workbench is a free tool made by one student. It runs on your device and holds your own work. Use it, but keep your own backups, and make sure what you read in a round is accurate and allowed by your league’s rules.
What this is
Debate Workbench is software for preparing and running debate and speech events: cutting evidence, building speeches, flowing a round and keeping time. It is provided free of charge. By using it you agree to these terms. If you do not, please do not use it.
Your work is yours
Everything you write, cut, import or flow belongs to you, and it stays on your own device (see the privacy page). We do not receive it, claim any rights in it, or use it to train anything. The software itself, its name and its design belong to its maker.
You are responsible for your evidence and your rules
- Accuracy. The app helps you mark and format evidence. It does not check that a quotation matches its source. You are responsible for every card you read, including its wording, its citation and any changes you make to it.
- League and tournament rules. Rules about evidence, electronic devices, outside help and recording differ by league and tournament. Follow yours. Nothing here is permission to do anything your league forbids.
- Other people’s material. Only import or share documents you have the right to use. Be careful with names of opponents, judges and schools in anything you share.
Backups are your job
Because your work lives only on your device, clearing your browser’s site data, deleting the app, or losing the device can delete it, and nobody can recover it for you. The app keeps rolling backups and can write a copy to a folder you choose, but those are conveniences on the same device or in your own files. Export a backup and keep it somewhere else, especially before a tournament.
No promises about the software
The software is provided “as is”, without any warranty, and it is still being built during the season, so it will have bugs. To the fullest extent the law allows, its maker is not liable for lost work, lost rounds, missed timing, or any other loss that comes from using it. This does not take away any rights you have by law that cannot be waived.
Not affiliated
Debate Workbench is an independent project. It is not made, endorsed or approved by the National Speech & Debate Association, any state league, Tabroom, Verbatim or any tournament.
If you are under 18
Most people using this are students. Please check with a parent or guardian, and with your coach, before using any software for school activities. If you are under 13, ask a parent or guardian first.
Changes
These terms may change as the app does, for example if accounts, sync or paid features arrive. If that happens it will be announced here and in the app before it takes effect, and the promise that your work is yours will not change.
